Rebel Without a Clue

"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable man persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
George Bernard Shaw

That is one of my favorite quotes. I've also read at least one other version. But even though the verbiage differs, the message is the same... Change is good.
So is it true? It certainly sounds reasonable, being unreasonable meaning that you're progressive, that is. We read his words, think about them for a moment, mentally nod our heads, and agree with Mr. Shaw. After all, it makes sense that you can't progress if you always stay within the boundries. Or do we just say that to justify our own behavior? Maybe we say it to feel "cool". Maybe we secretly picture ourselves as outlaws, rolling into the sleepy little town "Status Quo" on our thunderous choppers, wearing our philosophical black leather biker jackets with the big "Heck's Angels" patch on the back, pissing off Sheriff Theman by doing what we want to do when we want to do it simply because we can get away with it. Whether or not it's progess is irrelevant. We're unreasonable because it's fun.
It's human nature to want to change things. You need to be strong to make things change. And, if you're strong enough, eventually you'll have things your way and be content. Right?
But, if everything is the way you want it, don't you now control what Shaw calls the world? Doesn't that mean you're a new citizen of Status Quo and you've just been elected Sheriff Theman? Uh-oh! Is that the thunderous rumble of choppers I hear?
Congratulations sheriff, you've just set yourself up for failure! Or did you make progress?
